The Ten Rules Every Parent Should Know Before Talking with their Teen about Sex
AUSTIN, July 27, 2015 — Dr. Karen Rayne, the chair of the National Sex Ed Conference and associate editor of the American Journal of Sexuality Education, is excited to announce the release of her first book today, Breaking the Hush Factor: Ten Rules for Talking with Teenagers about Sex.
The book is not your typical parenting book: it’s not just for parents, it doesn’t make assumptions about gender or sexual orientation, and it won’t scare you. Instead, you’ll find ten concrete rules to strengthen your relationship with your teenager so that you can start to talk about sex. Because most people have sex and everyone needs to talk about sex. Teenagers have adults in their lives who can help them. Breaking the Hush Factor will teach those adults how.
The ten rules are divided into three sections – Preparing Yourself, When You and Your Teen Talk, and The Voice Inside – in which the ten rules are presented and explained.
“A powerful message to parents, straight from the heart of a mother and sexuality educator,” said Gina Ogden, Award-winning author of Expanding the Practice of Sex Therapy. “Breaking the Hush Factor means listen more, talk less, reach out for community, and seize your golden chance to help your kids develop sexual intelligence that will last them a lifetime—perhaps even save their lives.”
Dr. Rayne earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from University of Texas at Austin. She lives in Austin with her 10 – and 13-year-old daughters and dances country western, swing, salsa, and everything in between on the rare occasions when she is not working or parenting.
